So lets see in 2013, I continued to work for U-Haul until Nate graduated from MMI. He graduated the top of his class in February. We wanted to move near Mom & Paul and right after they moved he was offered a job up by them. So we moved to Payson, AZ. A couple of months after we moved, I saw a job for a front desk position at a local hotel. I got the job! I have been wanting to work in a hotel for a long time so I was ecstatic. About a month and a half later, they promoted me to Assistant Front Desk Manager. My boss called me on my birthday to offer it to me, talk about an awesome present!
We were doing pretty well (not a whole lot happened), but then a year later a position comes open for a General Manager's position in Pinetop, AZ (about 2 hrs away from Payson). At first I was hesitant to run a resort all by myself, but I offered to go over to Pinetop to "play" GM for a week. Nate told me that I should go for it no matter what, that even the interview would be good experience. He then told me I moved all over the world for him, it was time for him to move for my job. (Sometimes that man knows how to talk). So before I did my week there, we took a drive to take a look at the resort. WOW!! I instantly fell in love and I knew right there I could do this, and this was to be my job. I applied the next day. So while waiting on pins and needles for an interview, I did my 1st week. I got a call the day before my week ended, and asked if I could come to Sedona for an interview. They put Nate and I up in a hotel, and said that we could go have dinner after my interview. My interview lasted over 2 hrs just walking and talking. It was the most amazing experience I have ever had, or so I thought. I was told that there was other applicants and I would know by the end of the week, that was a Monday. Wednesday I get a call in the morning asking if I was still interested in the job, I of course said yes! I hung up and screamed and danced all over the house.
My first official day as a GM was May 25, 2014. This resort was in more need of work than I had thought, and there has been many times I would say "Holy Crap, What the Hell did I get myself into?!!!!!" What was this man thinking hiring a mom that had only been working consistently for about 5 years in her life and just raised kids!! Nate would just tell me to stop doubting myself. He was right. (I hate it when he's right) So 6 months later, I find out that I brought the scores up for the resort so much that we were up for Resort of the Year! WHAT!! Holy crap man seriously! THEN I find out I have to do a Power Point presentation in January (mind you this is December) and present to about 12-15 people from corporate. OMG uh this girl flunked spanish in high school so I wouldnt have to stand in front of people and talk all by myself. - So quick back history - for those of you that know me well you would say to that well you were a part of a drama group, where you had to sing and act. Well there is a bunch of other people around you and for some reason it was different. -
Anyways, the time came in January for the GM conference in Atlanta. I have not been apart from Nate in 8 years since the military so this was also not helping. He has been my rock and to do this without him just freaked me the hell out. So here I am practicing this presentation and I am about to throw up on my husband while practicing. (this was the day before I left) Needless to say this does not help at all!! The day of the presentation comes, I get to the presentation about 15 minutes early and they weren't ready yet. So I get to sit outside of this board room full of people I have never met or barely know. I start freaking out again, thinking "Oh I am totally going to screw it up for my team, I don't want to let anyone down, OMG what if I screw up in front of my boss!" There was more but that would take forever to write down. I go in, plug in my computer, and presented my outstanding team and our accomplishments over the last 6 months that I was there. I NAILED IT!! I looked over at my boss when I was done and he looked like a proud papa. When I get back to the room I called Nate and said I knew you could do it! Luckily I didn't have to wait to terribly long to find out who won, that night at the 1st dinner of the conference the winners was announced. We didn't win, but that was ok because I won a battle of my own.
That is all that has happened of major events in our life till January 2014. Stay Tuned for the rest of the year up to July!
